Didn’t make it to the pool on time yesterday and thank goodness. Ended up doing 5100 yards even so. Main set was 3×1000. I had time for two of them. Felt pretty good, but mostly due to the extreme drafting I had going on. Thanks, girl in front of me!
I also realized that constantly looking forward to see if you are going to hit people (/things, I guess) is good training for the neck muscles involved in sighting. No wonder I’m good at open water swimming – I’m always looking around.
[2019 Commentary – for any non-OW swimmers reading this – when you swim in lakes and oceans you need to “sight” forward, unless you are swimming beside your own kayak or boat. In races, you are usually swimming toward large orange or yellow buoys, so you peek forward from time to time to make sure you’re still headed in the right direction. This can cause a lot of neck strain if done poorly or not trained for.]
