The Tale of Wrightsville Beach Beginnings

[2020 Commentary – I disappointingly did not blog my first Wrightsville beach training swim at the time – just notes. So I’m expanding them with my current recollection:]

Swam OW at Wrightsville beach and it was perfect!  I was very confused by the names and places, but it’s pretty simple once you sling the lingo. Lisa and I took her car – she drove until we rest stopped and I took it to Johnny Mercer pier, where we parked. We walked over to Henderson to meet Paul and Chris, and here’s the expert’s (Paul) description of the swim: “Starting in Banks Channel at West Henderson, Swim with the tide south, cross over and come back Oceanside.”

The nice thing about oceanside is that as long as it’s warm enough you can get out and walk back whenever you feel like it.

The other location to remember is “Coast Guard” which is either the Coast Guard station (from the water) or the parking by the Coast Guard station (from the land).

It was a really enjoyable swim, although I was very, very tired from the mulching – I promised them that some day I would come to Wrightsville and swim when I wasn’t completely spent. Not sure they believed this wasn’t my normal state. The only downside was that we had to hurry back so that I could coach that afternoon. I resolved to try to do Saturdays in the future, and that was a good resolution. Thanks much to Lisa for driving all the way back so I could rest and for getting me home in time to work!

Water was 73 degrees; chop but not nearly as bad as Charleston chop.
